Overview

For about six weeks each spring, Baltistan turns a color it doesn’t wear the rest of the year. Starting with almond blossoms in late February and building through March and April with apricot, cherry, apple, and pear, the valleys around Skardu fill with white and pink against a backdrop of snow that hasn’t fully melted yet — a combination that only lasts as long as winter and spring briefly overlap. Apricots hold particular importance here beyond their looks: they’re a staple crop across Baltistan, dried, pressed for oil, and made into jams that carry the region’s flavor through the rest of the year.

The bloom doesn’t arrive everywhere at once. Lower elevations around Skardu city and Shigar Valley typically peak first, from mid-March into early April, while higher valleys — Khaplu, and later still, Hushe — catch up through mid to late April. That elevation gap is exactly what this tour is built around: a route that follows the blossom itself, from Skardu’s orchards and Chunda Valley, on to Shigar (where apricot blossoms famously frame the historic Shigar Fort), and finally to Khaplu, where terraced orchards fill an entire amphitheater of hillside beneath the Masherbrum range.

This is a spring-only tour, timed to a narrow and genuinely fleeting natural window — exact peak dates shift a little each year with the weather, so timing is confirmed closer to departure.

Trip Highlights

  • Chunda (Choundha) Valley, one of the most celebrated blossom valleys in Gilgit-Baltistan, where orchards line stone-walled irrigation channels
  • Shigar Fort framed by blooming apricot trees, contrasted against the nearby Sarfaranga Cold Desert
  • Kachura Lakes and Shangrila, with orchards in bloom around the lakeshore
  • Khaplu's terraced hillside orchards beneath the Masherbrum range, among the most dramatic blossom settings in the region
  • A rare visual combination found in few other places: fruit blossoms and snow-capped peaks in the same frame
  • Photography-focused pacing, with time built in at each stop rather than a rushed drive-through
