Overview

Broad Peak takes its name from its most obvious feature — a summit ridge roughly 1.5km long, broad enough that early explorers could see it was a different kind of mountain from the sharp spires around it. At 8,051m, it’s the world’s 12th-highest peak, standing directly across the Godwin-Austen Glacier from K2, and its base camp is reached via the same legendary Baltoro Glacier trek that leads to K2 Base Camp and Concordia.

It was first climbed on 9 June 1957 by an Austrian expedition — Fritz Wintersteller, Marcus Schmuck, Kurt Diemberger, and Hermann Buhl — via the West Spur, in a climb notable for its era: no supplemental oxygen, no high-altitude porters, and no base camp support on the summit push itself, an approach that looked ahead to the lightweight “alpine style” climbing that later became a defining feature of Karakoram mountaineering. The mountain’s first winter ascent came much later, on 5 March 2013, when Polish climbers Maciej Berbeka, Adam Bielecki, Tomasz Kowalski, and Artur Małek reached the summit — one of the last of the 8,000m peaks to fall in winter. Today’s standard route follows a similar line to the 1957 ascent: a rock gully leads to Camp 1 around 6,000m, followed by a broad snow face up to Camp 2 at roughly 6,400m, continuing up the West Spur toward the long summit ridge.

Base camp itself, at roughly 4,950m, sits in one of the most dramatic settings of any 8,000m peak in the world — with K2 directly across the glacier and the Gasherbrum group visible to the south.
