Overview

Gasherbrum II is widely regarded as one of the most approachable of the world’s fourteen 8,000m peaks — a reputation that has made it a popular first 8,000er for climbers building toward harder Karakoram objectives, without making it any less of a genuine high-altitude achievement. At 8,035m, it’s the world’s 13th-highest mountain, first climbed in July 1956 by an Austrian expedition — Fritz Moravec, Josef Larch, and Hans Willenpart — via what’s now known as the Normal Route up the southwest ridge.

That same route made history again decades later: on 2 February 2011, Simone Moro, Denis Urubko, and Cory Richards reached the summit in a three-day push, completing the first winter ascent of any 8,000m peak in Pakistan — a benchmark that had resisted attempts for years, made harder by the team surviving an avalanche during their descent. Reaching Gasherbrum II’s base camp means following the same classic Baltoro Glacier trek used for K2 and Gasherbrum I, via Askole, Paiyu, Urdukas, and Concordia, before the relatively direct southwest ridge route takes over — logical, well-traveled, and comparatively safer than many other 8,000m lines, which is exactly why it draws first-time 8,000m climbers.

Trip Highlights

  • Summiting Gasherbrum II (8,035m), the world's 13th-highest mountain and one of the more accessible 8,000m objectives
  • The historic Normal Route (southwest ridge), first climbed in 1956 and the site of the 2011 first winter ascent of an 8,000m peak in Pakistan
  • The classic Baltoro Glacier approach, with views of K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I, and the Trango Towers along the way
  • Full high-altitude logistical support, from base camp to summit
  • A well-suited first 8,000m objective for climbers with strong high-altitude experience
