Overview
The Hushe Valley, in Ghanche District’s Community Controlled Hunting Area system, is one of the recognized zones in Gilgit-Baltistan for legal, regulated Himalayan ibex trophy hunting. The program operates under Pakistan’s broader trophy hunting framework, which issues a limited number of permits each year through government-run auctions by the GB Wildlife and Parks Department — a system designed so that hunting revenue funds conservation and flows back to the local community managing the hunting area, rather than operating outside regulation.
Himalayan ibex (Capra sibirica) in this region are known for their mass rather than extreme horn length compared to some other ibex subspecies — a head with horns over 40 inches is considered a strong trophy, with exceptional specimens reaching into the high 40-inch range. The official hunting season runs from 1 November to 30 April, with December and January generally considered the most productive months, as ibex move to lower, more accessible elevations with the onset of winter. Hunts typically take place between roughly 2,800m and 4,500m, on foot with local guides and porters, following terrain and animal movement rather than a fixed daily route.
This is a legal, permit-based activity rather than an open hunting trip — securing a license through the official auction/bidding process is a required first step, arranged well in advance of travel.
