Machulo La K2 View Point Trek
Overview
In the Balti language, “Machulo La” translates roughly to “the top of Machulo” — a fitting name for a ridge that local guides regularly call the easiest and most affordable way to see five of the world’s 8,000m peaks in a single frame. Machulo itself is a small, green village in the Hushe Valley, about 15km from Khaplu in Ghanche District, tucked beneath a wall of mountains on its western side. Above the village, several vantage points open up along the ridge; the best-known of these carries the local nickname “Khoxonmo Hltasa,” roughly translating to “the thrilling viewpoint,” a name earned by what unfolds once you reach it — K2, Broad Peak, and the Gasherbrum group standing together across the horizon, along with Nanga Parbat visible far to the west on a clear day.
This is a genuinely separate route from Humbroq and the K2 Viewpoint trek above — different village, different valley approach (via Khaplu rather than directly up the Hushe Valley), and a different ridge altogether. What makes Machulo La stand apart from those other K2 viewpoints is how little it demands in return for that view: no glacier crossing and no technical climbing, just a steady, well-defined trail through pasture and ridgeline that gains altitude gradually over two trekking days. That accessibility is exactly why it has become a favorite with university trekking clubs, family groups, and travelers who want a genuine high-altitude Karakoram experience without the multi-week commitment of a Baltoro trek. The trade-off for reaching an easier and shorter trek is elevation: the viewpoint itself sits above 5,000m, so the itinerary is deliberately paced with a built-in acclimatization stage rather than rushed straight to the top.
The approach starts with a long but scenic jeep drive out of Skardu — roughly 150km along the Shyok River through Khaplu — before the trekking begins from Machulo village itself.
