Overview

Marsur Rock didn’t exist on any tourist map until 2018, when a local photographer from Skardu, out shooting landscapes, stumbled across a narrow granite ledge jutting dramatically out over the valley below — and shared the photo. It’s been compared ever since to Norway’s famous Trolltunga, and for good reason: the 38-foot ledge delivers the same vertigo-inducing, photograph-ready payoff, just above Skardu instead of a Norwegian fjord.

The hike starts in Hussainabad village, a short drive from Skardu on the road toward Khaplu. From the trailhead, the route climbs through the green Broq Valley before the terrain turns rocky, dry, and steep for the final push to the rock itself — a moderate, sustained climb of roughly 5.7km round trip and 600–800m of elevation gain. The reward at the top is one of the best panoramic viewpoints near Skardu: the Indus River winding below, the Sarfaranga Cold Desert, Kharpocho Fort, Hussainabad village, and on clear days the confluence of the Indus and Shigar rivers with Shigar Valley in the distance.

Trip Highlights

  • Standing on Marsur Rock's dramatic 38-foot granite ledge, often compared to Norway's Trolltunga
  • Panoramic views of the Indus River, Sarfaranga Cold Desert, Kharpocho Fort, and Shigar Valley
  • A relatively short, accessible hike (2–4 hours round trip) with a big scenic payoff
  • A genuinely recent discovery (2018) rather than a long-established tourist trail
  • Option to camp overnight at the rock for sunset and a star-filled night sky
