Overview

Astore Valley doesn’t get the crowds that Hunza or Skardu do, and that’s exactly its appeal. Stretching some 120km through Gilgit-Baltistan and known locally as the “land of pastures,” Astore sits on the northern side of Nanga Parbat and opens onto a string of quieter, greener destinations — Rama Meadows, Rama Lake, Minimarg — that feel a world away from the Karakoram Highway’s busier stretches, despite being just a turn off it.

The centerpiece of this tour is Rama: a short jeep ride above Astore town leads into pine-forested meadows where the southern face of Nanga Parbat rises directly ahead, often mirrored in the still water of Rama Lake after a gentle uphill walk. The valley has its own slower rhythm — forest trails, grazing cattle, a PTDC guesthouse where the loudest sound most evenings is the wind — which makes it a natural fit for travelers who want genuine northern Pakistan scenery without turning the trip into an expedition.

The route in follows the Karakoram Highway north from Islamabad through Kaghan Valley and over Babusar Pass (or via Chilas, depending on season and road conditions), giving the journey itself as much scenic value as the destination.
