Overview

Jashn-e-Ghanche — the Ghanche Festival — is Khaplu’s own celebration of Balti culture, bringing together traditional sports, music, and community life in one of Baltistan’s most historic towns. The festival centers on traditional Balti polo, a fast, locally-rooted version of the sport distinct from the more internationally known Shandur Polo Festival further west, alongside cultural performances that have included traditional Balti skits such as “Sken Chin Bargam,” recreational activities, and community gatherings organized with the district administration and local tourism department.

The festival’s exact timing and focus has varied by year — recent editions have been tied to significant dates on the national calendar, with local departments organizing cultural programming alongside the sporting events. Whatever form it takes in a given year, the common thread is Ghanche district’s own identity: Balti heritage, local sport, and community celebration, set against Khaplu’s backdrop of historic forts and Karakoram peaks.
